24 Hour Tuition Trip On The Wooly

20 July 2010

Dave gets a new pb..

In-between looking after my wife and supporting her in her illness, I had a 24hr tuition trip booked in, so making sure people were about to look after my lovely wife Jane, as I would be away.

Meeting up with Dave at the Wooly, we started the tuition with a walk round lake 8 showing Dave as many aspects in watercraft, finding carp...like fish topping/crashing, fish crashing, fish fizzing, coloured water, weed floating etc.

Straight away we hit bingo and I pointed out an area of coloured water in the edge. They had finished feeding on the bottom but out in front of us I asked Dave to tell me what he could see.. I then pointed, Christ he said, there's loads of carp sitting just under the surface!

Floater time I said, let's go and get the floater gear.

We then went and got the gear from my van and then made our way back to the area.

Straight away I filled the the spod with Dynamite expander floating trout pellets glugged in Dynamites halibut oil, I add the oil for several reasons; it sends out a scent trail across the lake like a chum line, but it also gives you a nice flat spot in windy conditions.

I then spodded the floaters out behind the fish and then snatched the spod back so it skipped back across the area emptying/spreading its contents over the area the fish are sitting.

I've found over the years that by spodding mixers...you get a far better reaction from the carp, then using a catapult. You can get freebies out at mega range 100 yards plus. By dipping the spod into the water adds weight, so it makes it a lot easier achieving these long ranges.

I am using Kordas Interceptor and Nashes bolt machine controllers in their various sizes.

I am using the Korda Kruiser control hook length in 6, 8,10, and 12 breaking strain, so I am covered in all conditions I might find myself in, I find it very tough and reliable. Then I use a ring swivel to attach the mainline and hook length together, by simply tying the mainline to the swivel and then pull it into the controller where it becomes semi fixed and tie the hook length onto the ring at the other end of the swivel.

I simply knotless knot the hook bait to the hook. These days I am using it very tight to the hook but I do mess around with long hairs on the top as well, trial and error on the day by tweaking the hair/hook and length of the hook length, I like a 5ft length as standard as I found 5ft the best for me.

I have many different Dynamite fluro coloured hookbaits in 15mm, best fluro colour I have found is Dynamites fluro orange Tutti Frutti.

You can trim these down into what size and shape by using a pair of scissors.

I also trim and shape cork balls with scalpel and sandpaper.plus iam messing around with enterprize tackles plastic chum mixers, you can weight the plastic baits by changing the weight of the split shoot,so you can use bigger hooks by adding a heavier weight,by doing this it makes the hookbait flip over,so the hook sits above the plastic mixer on the surface the water.
you will need to get a selection of differant sized shot from your local tackle shop!.

I like to use a big rod a 12ft 3 1/2 tc Pursuit, so I can hit the distance, coupled with a big pit Emblem reel to get the controllers out there, plus the Emblem reel has a very good retrieve so I can keep in control with the fish and pick up line quick.

Before making a cast make sure you oil the hook length to give it extra buoyancy, it's on your hands from refilling your spod!

I like to cast it out way past the fish and slowly draw it back to the feeding fish.

Now back to Daves tuition. Dave lost one but an hour later he hooked into another fish and after some hairy moments in the weed, I landed a long mirror that looked about mid twenty.

Dave looked after the fish while I got the vision matt/weigh sling retainer ready, plus a bottle of cold lake water to keep the fish damp.

We made sure the fishes pecs were safe running along its body before we took the fish to the mat for Daves trophy shot.

On the scales, it went 24.8 a new pb for Dave so he was well happy, plus he was gaining more knowledge in his carping.

I ended up having an old chunky mirror of 23.8m chodded on Dynamites red fish.

Anyway time to go now, got to spend some time with Jane.

Until next time

Be lucky.
